We interviewed Edward Parkinson, employed at the United States Congress. He is from Johannesburg, South Africa and this is his vision of Patagonia.

What is Patagonia for you?

Patagonia for me is hiking, glaciers, and camping. I'd love to go there to experience the nature and scenery of the environment, but also to see the raw beauty of the place.

What is the role it plays in your opinion Patagonia in the world today?

I would have to say global warming. I would like to see Patagonia as it exists today before the glaciers all melt away. In recent pictures that I've seen of the region it is clear that there has been significant melting in the past five or so years and I would like to see it before it has changed drastically. Tourism would certainly apply here, or more eco-tourisn, as would environment and economics.

What is your vision of Patagonia globally in the next 20 years?

Patagonia I think will change a lot in the next 20 years. I believe that there will be dramatic environmental damaged to the eco-system of the region due to the warming of the atmosphere. It has already occurred in places like Mount Kenya and the ice caps its peak. On the tourism side I believe that Patagonia could and should be a place that the world should be more aware of. I didn't see much advertising of it in South Africa and that could be something to work on.
